Pese a sus antecedentes en pel\u00edculas como Oculus: El Reflejo del Mal (Oculus, 2014) y Silencio (Hush, 2016), no fue hasta el desembarco en Netflix de El Juego de Gerald (Gerald\u2019s Game, 2017) -adaptaci\u00f3n de la novela de Stephen King- que el nombre de Flanagan comenz\u00f3 a gravitar con fuerza dentro del g\u00e9nero de terror.<\/p>\n<p>A partir de ah\u00ed, y con el apoyo de la plataforma y una mayor libertad creativa, lleg\u00f3 el \u00e9xito de la serie antol\u00f3gica La Maldici\u00f3n de Hill House (The Haunting of Hill House, 2019) y su continuaci\u00f3n, La Maldici\u00f3n de Bly Mannor (The Haunting of Bly Mannor, 2020). El siguiente paso fue con Doctor Sue\u00f1o (Doctor Sleep, 2019), secuela de El Resplandor (The Shining, 1980) que intent\u00f3 acercar las incongruencias entre la obra original de Stephen King y la visi\u00f3n del cineasta Stanley Kubrick. Luego del modesto desempe\u00f1o en taquilla, Flanagan vuelve al terreno del streaming con una propuesta en la que se involucr\u00f3 profundamente y despleg\u00f3 toda su impronta.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bfVer para creer o creer para ver? \u00bfEn qu\u00e9 se diferencia la fe de la religi\u00f3n? As\u00ed como los recuerdos se corrompen con el paso del tiempo, \u00bfla Biblia podr\u00eda haber sufrido el mismo efecto?<\/p>\n<p>Estas son algunas de las inc\u00f3gnitas que sirven como disparador de la historia que transcurre en un pueblo de poco m\u00e1s de cien habitantes ubicado en medio de una isla. En ese paisaje gris y alejado del resto del mundo se da el retorno de un hombre que naci\u00f3 all\u00ed y que acaba de salir de la c\u00e1rcel por haber matado a una mujer al manejar borracho en la ciudad. En paralelo, tambi\u00e9n llega un joven y carism\u00e1tico cura para reemplazar temporariamente al longevo y enfermo padre de la parroquia local. Desde John Carpenter, pasando por Brian De Palma, Roman Polanski y William Friedkin sin escalas. Por supuesto, tambi\u00e9n habr\u00e1 espacio para la influencia del expresionismo alem\u00e1n de comienzos del siglo XX.<\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, entre los muchos atractivos de esta miniserie de siete episodios de una hora promedio cada uno, tambi\u00e9n se encuentran sus extensos di\u00e1logos sobre cuestiones existenciales y una paulatina construcci\u00f3n de personajes. No hay un solo protagonista en esta nueva producci\u00f3n original de Netflix; la historia se va armando a trav\u00e9s de las distintas capas y puntos de vista de los habitantes del pueblo. M\u00e1s all\u00e1 de que no es una propuesta ideal para maratonear por la atenci\u00f3n que requiere la trama, no tiene cap\u00edtulos meseta y logra mantener un pulso narrativo s\u00f3lido que explotar\u00e1 en los dos episodios finales. Ambas pel\u00edculas fueron dirigidas por Mike Flanagan, lo que dispara la pregunta: \u00bfHace cu\u00e1nto tiempo el director ten\u00eda la idea de llevar a cabo este proyecto?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDios conc\u00e9deme la serenidad para aceptar las cosas que no puedo cambiar, el valor para cambiar las cosas que puedo y la sabidur\u00eda para reconocer la diferencia\u201d. Al igual que la novela Matadero Cinco de Kurt Vonnegut, Misa de Medianoche (Midnight Mass, 2021) apela a esta plegaria \u2013 tambi\u00e9n vinculada al programa de los Doce Pasos de los Alcoh\u00f3licos An\u00f3nimo- para mantener el estado de alerta de un lado y otro de la pantalla. Nada es lo que parece, nada es casualidad. Lo cierto es que la nueva ficci\u00f3n de Flanagan para Netflix es una propuesta que quedar\u00e1 haciendo eco en quien la mire m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del \u00faltimo episodio.<\/p>\n<p>En el nombre del padre, del hijo y de las plataformas de streaming.
